Diablo 4 boasts 5 exploreable areas with over 150 dungeons
Blizzard Entertainment released Diablo IV Quarterly Updates yesterday, and several developers have commented on what the upcoming open world RPG will offer players. Recently appointed Game Director Joe Shely said Diablo IV will be “an immersive world where you can enjoy wandering and getting lost.” These words were even more important when Environmental Art Director Brian Fletcher and Senior External Environmental Artist Matt McDaid added that Sanctuary (the game world/human realm) boasts 5 exploreable areas with over 150 dungeons.
It’s important to keep in mind what’s going on within Activision Blizzard with regards to the ongoing assertion of workplace culture. The ongoing lawsuit against the company by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) is an overreported harmful workplace culture. Most of the lawsuits focus on “violations of national citizenship and equal pay laws,” especially regarding the treatment of women and other marginalized groups. Diablo IV has a lot to do and see. The dungeons players encounter are full of dynamic weather, lighting effects and props, making each attack feel unique and personalized. When it comes to visual storytelling and directing, the team focuses on two pillars: “The Old Master” and “Return to the Dark”. Art Director Chris Ryder said:
“We approach the creation of the environment for Diablo IV through a darker and more grounded interpretation than the previous one. The “Old Masters” column takes into account the techniques used by classic painters such as Rembrandt, creating a lens that can filter our art. The use of detail, tonal range, and professional color palettes “Return to the Dark” pillars penetrate everything from dungeons to lighting, embodying the idea that the Sanctuary is a dangerous and dark medieval Gothic world.”

“We’ve talked a lot about the gloomy aesthetic that Diablo IV brings, but seeing and playing with it is different. There’s blood and corpses everywhere, there’s a hopeless world, and it’s incredibly dark. After Diablo III, it’s a stark contrast indeed. You can roam the world to find as many cool things as possible before the demo time runs out and clear the two dungeons available to the end… The task of slaughtering monsters is more satisfying than ever. I’m sure it will make more sense outside of an impossible demo. Diablo IV is definitely a long way off, but the demo is a great showcase of the direction the game is going.”
